Be aware. Be confident. Get home safe.

This is where Safe Family began — keeping people safe in the community, out and about. The one habit that protects you everywhere is awareness. Switch it on with the ABC's.

The ABC's of awareness

A
Awareness

"007 / terminator eyes" — peripheral vision to see everyone around you. Stay sober and present; trust what doesn't feel right.

B
Body Language

Read others (agitated? following? too close?) and project your own — walk tall, head up, eye contact.

C
Communication

Speak calmly, say "no" with confidence, and tell someone — alert a guard or shopkeeper, get to a safe person.

Part A

Personal safety in the community

Walk, run, ride safe
  • See everyone around you; keep a safe space.
  • Trust weird feelings — change direction.
  • No loud headphones at night; look behind you.
  • Safety in numbers; walk towards the traffic.
Public transport — be RailSmart
  • Stay behind the yellow line, in CCTV view.
  • Sit near the guard.
  • Know the emergency phones & buttons.
  • Move carriages or alert someone if unsafe.
Rideshare & taxisNew
  • Check plate, car & driver photo; let them say your name first.
  • Sit in the back; share your trip.
  • Watch the route; know the in-app 000 button.
Shops, ATMs, scams & theftNew
  • Shield the keypad; check the slot; prefer tap-and-go.
  • "Keep it light, hold it tight, out of sight."
  • Watch for distraction theft (pairs, a spill, a question).
In the car — carjacking, road rage & being followed
  • Doors locked, windows up in traffic.
  • Don't engage aggressive drivers — drive somewhere busy.
  • Being followed? Never drive home — go to a police/petrol station.
Nightlife & drink safetyNew
  • Plan the trip home first; share live location.
  • Watch your drink; never leave it unattended.
  • Mates look after mates; know the spiking signs — call 000 if unwell.
Getting separated / lost in publicNew
  • Set a meeting point before you go in.
  • Teach kids to stay put & find a "safe helper".
  • Write your number on young kids.
Safety apps & Emergency SOSNew
  • Put Emergency+ on every phone (GPS + what3words to 000).
  • Learn your phone's Emergency SOS.
  • Share live location for trips home at night.
Active bystander — see something, say somethingNew
  • The 5 D's: Distract · Delegate · Direct · Delay · Document.
  • Then report: 000, or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
  • You don't have to be a hero — get help.
Seniors out & aboutNew
  • Know the distraction playbook; keep a hand on your bag.
  • Verify at the door; never pay a doorstep stranger.
  • Stay confident — it's fine to say no and walk away.
Part B

Everyday & emergency safety

The Australian environment — fire, flood, water, sun, roads and knowing what to do in an emergency.

Bushfire & flood — be prepared
  • Make a written plan before the season.
  • Know the 3 levels: Advice · Watch & Act · Emergency Warning.
  • Never drive through floodwater — "if it's flooded, forget it." (SES 132 500)
Water, beach & pools
  • Swim between the red-and-yellow flags; check the Beachsafe app.
  • Caught in a rip? Stay calm and float — signal for help.
  • Home pools: fence it, supervise it, learn CPR.
Sun & heat
  • UV 3+? Slip · Slop · Slap · Seek · Slide.
  • Check the UV level, not the temperature.
  • Never leave kids or pets in a parked car.
Roads, cyclists & driveways
  • Driveways aren't playgrounds — check before you reverse.
  • Hold hands near roads; be bright, be seen.
  • Young drivers: rules on speed, phones & passengers.
First aid & calling 000
  • Learn DRSABCD & refresh CPR yearly.
  • Teach kids to call 000 (and 112 / 106 backups).
  • Keep a first-aid kit at home and in the car.
Crowds & events
  • Agree a meeting point; buddy up; charge phones.
  • In a crush, move with the flow; lift small kids up.
  • Spot the exits & first-aid tent on arrival.
📍 Know your neighbourhood

Map your safe places and safe people — shops, the police station, friends' homes, well-lit routes home. Teach kids the same. Don't wait alone anywhere, especially by a roadside.
